Detailed Description

Universal-modder is a framework that lets AI coding agents mod almost any PC game by providing skills, tools, and a shared knowledge base.

The tool solves the problem of making game modding accessible to AI agents by equipping them with the ability to reverse-engineer game engines, read actual game code, generate art and audio assets through fal, test modifications in running games, and document their findings for future agents. It works by integrating with multiple AI coding platforms—Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, and others—through a unified skill set and MCP server configuration, allowing any agent to discover a game's engine, determine the modding route, build the mod, create assets, validate changes in-game, and record what it learned.

The tool suits developers who want to mod games without deep engine expertise and who have access to an AI coding agent. It works with games across different engines and modding frameworks, from Terraria to Age of Empires II to Minecraft. Installation varies by agent: Claude Code users install through the plugin marketplace, Cursor users can find it in the Cursor Marketplace or clone the repository, VS Code users enable chat plugins and install from source, and others can clone the repository directly or use the skills-only installation. The tool requires Python 3.10 or later, ffmpeg, a fal API key for asset generation, and optionally Blender for 3D sprite rendering.

The project maintains a shared knowledge base documenting modding approaches for different games and engines, allowing agents to learn from previous work. Development activity shows ongoing expansion of agent compatibility and integration with multiple AI coding platforms through standardized configuration files. The tool actively supports diverse modding scenarios ranging from simple asset replacement to complex engine integration tasks.
