Detailed Description

postgres-containers is a container image builder that generates immutable PostgreSQL operand images for all community-supported PostgreSQL major versions.

The repository addresses the need for reliable, up-to-date PostgreSQL container images tailored for Kubernetes deployments. It provides maintenance scripts and build processes that generate images based on Debian stable and oldstable releases, ensuring consistency across supported PostgreSQL versions. The images are built using a bake-based process that constructs directly on top of official Debian slim images, detaching from the official PostgreSQL image to maintain independence and control over the build pipeline.

The tool is designed specifically as an operand for the CloudNativePG Kubernetes operator and is not intended for standalone container use. Organizations running PostgreSQL on Kubernetes through CloudNativePG should adopt these images. The project maintains three image types: minimal, standard, and system variants, with minimal and standard images supporting backup plugins like Barman Cloud, while system images bundle Barman Cloud binaries directly. Multi-architecture support covers linux/amd64 and linux/arm64, and images ship with build attestations including SBOMs and provenance metadata. The repository commits to supporting Debian-based images until their official end-of-life dates, with best-effort maintenance afterward until long-term support begins, providing three months advance notice before any discontinuation.
