Detailed Description

ETCPACK is a texture compression tool that encodes images into ETC1, ETC2, and EAC formats for use in graphics applications.

The tool addresses the need to compress textures efficiently for real-time graphics rendering. It implements Ericsson Texture Compression, a format standardized in OpenGL ES 3.0 and OpenGL 4.3. The software compresses images into multiple codec variants, including RGB8 ETC2 for higher-quality compression than the older ETC1 standard, as well as formats for RGBA textures and single-channel or dual-channel textures. ETC2 maintains backward compatibility with ETC1, allowing older compressed textures to be decoded on ETC2-capable devices.

Developers targeting OpenGL ES 3.0 capable mobile handsets or systems supporting OpenGL 4.3 should consider this tool. It suits game developers and hardware vendors building graphics tool chains who need standardized texture compression. The tool is provided as a command-line program with source code, making it suitable for integration into build pipelines or custom tool chains. The software supports compression of both new textures and legacy ETC1 assets.

The project shows active maintenance with regular updates to the codebase. Development activity includes ongoing refinements to compression algorithms and codec implementations. The tool receives periodic improvements to support the full range of ETC2-package formats defined in the Khronos standards.
