Repo of the day
storytold/photocraft led the day with +3895 stars to 6186 total stars and +0 subscribers to 0 total subscribers. PhotoCraft is an image editor that provides an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Photoshop in pure Rust.
The tool addresses the need for a capable, open-source alternative to proprietary image editing software by rebuilding Photoshop's core functionality from scratch. It supports layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, type, vectors, and brushes, and can open and work with real PSD files. The entire application is written in Rust and runs natively across multiple platforms including macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and the web, with offline-first operation and no dependency on external services.
PhotoCraft suits developers and artists seeking an open-source image editor they can inspect, modify, and control without vendor lock-in. It is particularly relevant for those working in environments where proprietary software is impractical or undesirable, and for projects requiring scriptable or extensible image editing capabilities. The tool's Rust implementation makes it suitable for integration into other Rust-based applications or systems where native performance and memory safety are priorities.
The project is in early alpha status, indicating that core functionality is present but the tool remains under active development with potential instability and incomplete features. Development activity shows ongoing work to expand capabilities and improve stability as the project matures toward broader usability.
