Detailed Description

GoBackup is a CLI tool for scheduling automated backups of databases and files to cloud storage.

The tool addresses the need for reliable, low-maintenance backup infrastructure on application servers. It works by exporting data from supported databases, archiving files, compressing and optionally encrypting the results, then uploading to cloud storage. The approach emphasizes simplicity: a single configuration file sets up scheduled backups that run automatically without ongoing maintenance. Large backups can be split into multiple parts, and old backups are automatically recycled to minimize storage costs. The tool runs as a daemon to handle scheduling internally rather than relying on external cron or scheduler setup.

GoBackup suits small to medium-sized servers where a lightweight, self-contained backup solution is preferable to heavier alternatives. It supports ten database engines including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, MongoDB, and SQLite, and can upload to numerous cloud storage providers spanning S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure, Aliyun OSS, DigitalOcean Spaces, MinIO, and many others, as well as traditional protocols like FTP, SFTP, and WebDAV. The tool includes a web UI for managing backups. The README positions it as a replacement for the Ruby-based backup gem, eliminating Ruby as a dependency while maintaining similar functionality.

Development activity shows consistent maintenance with regular test execution and active release cycles. The project maintains Docker and Homebrew distribution channels, indicating ongoing packaging support. Notification functionality for backup success or failure events has been added to the tool, expanding its operational capabilities beyond core backup and storage functions.
