SoundCraft is a digital audio workstation that provides recording, editing and mixing audio as an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Avid Pro Tools built entirely in Rust.
The tool addresses the need for a free, open-source alternative to proprietary digital audio workstations by recreating the Pro Tools workflow that audio engineers already know. It implements multitrack editing, a full mixer with plugins, sends and automation, MIDI support, recording and bouncing capabilities. The entire application runs natively across macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, and also in the browser. Every action is scriptable from the command line or by an AI agent, enabling automation and integration into larger workflows.
SoundCraft suits engineers and producers who want to work within the familiar Pro Tools paradigm without licensing costs or proprietary constraints. It is particularly valuable for those seeking a cross-platform solution that works on Linux or FreeBSD, or who need scriptable audio processing for automation and AI integration. The project is in pre-alpha status, making it most appropriate for early adopters and contributors rather than production-critical work.
The project maintains active community engagement through Discord. Development focuses on implementing core digital audio workstation functionality with attention to the established Pro Tools interface patterns that users expect. The codebase is written entirely in Rust using the egui framework for the user interface, reflecting a commitment to memory safety and cross-platform compatibility.
