Detailed Description

Node-RED Linux Installers is a collection of shell scripts that automate the installation of Node-RED on various Linux distributions.

The project addresses the need for a straightforward, repeatable way to deploy Node-RED across different Linux flavors. It provides separate installation scripts tailored to Debian-based systems (Debian, Ubuntu, Raspberry Pi OS) and RPM-based systems (Red Hat, Fedora, CentOS, Oracle Linux). Each script handles the installation of Node-RED globally and installs Node.js if required, using sudo for necessary system-level operations.

The installers expose extensive command-line options and environment variables to customize the deployment, allowing users to set the system user, manage firewall rules, and configure other aspects of the installation. The RPM-based installer can optionally open port 1880 in the firewall's public zone to allow external access to Node-RED. The project also includes a separate pibuild directory containing scripts and files used to build pre-installed Debian packages for Raspberry Pi, though the main installer script is recommended for most users. Anyone adopting these scripts should review them before execution to understand the actions they perform, since they require root access.

The project maintains active engagement with issues and pull requests, responding to user reports and accepting contributions that improve compatibility and functionality across supported distributions. Development focuses on ensuring the scripts work reliably across the range of Linux variants they target, with updates addressing platform-specific installation challenges and user requests for additional configuration options.
