Detailed Description

OpenSC2K is an open-source remake of SimCity 2000 built with Godot that recreates the classic city-building simulation in a modern engine.

The project solves the problem of preserving and extending a beloved 1990s game by reimplementing its simulation and interface from scratch. It works by importing the original SimCity 2000 Special Edition executable to extract graphics, text, sound, and music assets, then running the city simulation within Godot. This approach allows the remake to function as a playable recreation while respecting the original game's intellectual property by not including its source code or assets directly.

Developers considering adoption should know this is for players who want to experience SimCity 2000 with modern enhancements rather than a faithful pixel-perfect port. The project suits anyone interested in city-building games who owns a copy of the original Windows 95 release. Key extensions beyond the original include support for larger cities up to 512 tiles per side and smaller ones down to 16 tiles, per-tile resolution data maps instead of lower-resolution overlays, expanded MicroSims and movable objects, improved terrain generation, new isometric data views with service coverage and transport overlays, and support for external graphics and music packs. Cities built at larger sizes save in the new SC2X format, which the original game cannot open, though original SC2 saves remain compatible. The project has incorporated fixes identified by the sc2kfix project.

Development is active with regular commits and pull requests. The maintainer uses AI tools including large language models for code generation, refactoring, research, documentation, testing, and debugging, with all architectural decisions and implementations reviewed and directed by the project maintainer. The project maintains a formal AI usage policy documented in the repository.
