Maintainer activity

48 people did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

At least 10% of notebooks's 48 maintainers work at Red Hat. 17 say where they work, and 5 of those are Red Hat.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 18, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits. How this is counted.

How this project is maintained

About 3% of issues opened in the past year have never received a reply. 74% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. 36% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months. 69% of issues opened in the past year have been closed, leaving a working backlog. Three people close 60% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

Kubeflow Notebooks is a Kubernetes operator that runs interactive development environments for AI, ML, and Data workloads on Kubernetes clusters.

The tool addresses the need to provision and manage notebook environments at scale within Kubernetes infrastructure. Rather than requiring developers to set up notebooks locally on their workstations, Kubeflow Notebooks allows users to create and run notebook containers directly in the cluster. The operator provides native support for JupyterLab, RStudio, and Visual Studio Code (code-server), and enables administrators to define standard notebook images with pre-installed packages for organizational consistency. Access control integrates with Kubeflow's RBAC system, making it straightforward to share notebooks across teams while maintaining security boundaries.

Teams should adopt this tool if they are already running Kubeflow on Kubernetes and want to centralize notebook management for their data science and ML workflows. It suits organizations that need to standardize development environments across multiple users and enforce access policies. Currently, Kubeflow Notebooks must be deployed as part of a full Kubeflow platform installation rather than as a standalone component, which is an important constraint for adoption decisions.

The project maintains active community engagement through a dedicated Notebooks Working Group, with discussion channels on Kubeflow Slack and a mailing list for users and maintainers. Development is tracked through a public roadmap documented in the repository's issues and ROADMAP file. The project holds OpenSSF Best Practices certification, indicating attention to security and maintainability standards.
