How this project is maintained

Around half of the issues opened in the past year never receive a reply. 48% of open issues come from outside the core team, a mix of external reports and the maintainers' own roadmap. Work labelled "Performance" is answered fastest, typically in under an hour, while "Paper Cut" waits about 31 hours. 72% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months, so the open count overstates what is actively being worked. Only 5% of issues opened in the past year have been closed.

Detailed Description

Graphite is a free, open source vector and raster graphics editor that combines layer-based compositing with a node-based procedural graphics engine for 2D content creation.

The tool addresses the need for nondestructive editing workflows in graphics design by building its architecture around a node graph core rather than following the conventional destructive editing model of traditional creative applications. Users work with both traditional layer-based compositing and procedural node-based generative design, allowing them to create and modify graphics while preserving the ability to adjust earlier steps in the workflow. The editor wraps this node graph foundation with user-friendly tools for vector and raster work.

Graphite suits designers and artists who want to combine procedural generation with traditional 2D graphics work in a single application. The project is positioned as an all-in-one graphics toolbox built more like a game engine than a conventional creative app, with planned expansion into photo editing, motion graphics, digital painting, desktop publishing, and VFX compositing. The tool is available in alpha as a web-based editor, making it accessible without installation while the project matures.

Development activity shows consistent engagement with the codebase through regular commits and pull requests addressing both feature additions and bug fixes. The project maintains active issue tracking with responses to user-reported problems and feature requests. Documentation efforts include a website with feature roadmaps and volunteer contribution guidelines, indicating structured planning for the project's evolution. Community engagement is encouraged through newsletter subscriptions and donation options, suggesting the maintainers are building toward sustainable development practices.
