How this project is maintained

Around half of the issues opened in the past year never receive a reply. 64% of open issues come from outside the core team, a mix of external reports and the maintainers' own roadmap. 79% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months, so the open count overstates what is actively being worked. Only 6% of issues opened in the past year have been closed. Three people close 73% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

DevilutionX is a port of the classic action role-playing game Diablo and its Hellfire expansion that runs on modern operating systems.

The project solves the problem of running Diablo on contemporary systems where the original game no longer functions reliably. It achieves this by porting the game engine to modern platforms while preserving the original gameplay experience. The port includes engine improvements, bug fixes, and optional quality-of-life features such as widescreen support and customizable interface elements like health and experience bars, all configurable through the game settings.

DevilutionX suits players who own the original game or have purchased it from authorized digital retailers and want to play it on current hardware without compatibility issues. The project requires access to the original game data files, which can be obtained from the original CD, digital storefronts, or the shareware version for trying the game before committing. The tool is also positioned as a foundation for modding, with the full source code and modding tools available to enable community-created modifications.

The project maintains active development with regular test builds available for those willing to test bleeding-edge versions, and it actively solicits contributions across coding, documentation, and testing. The community operates a Discord server for discussion and coordination. The project provides comprehensive documentation including installation instructions, build guides, and a wiki covering features and configuration options, alongside a detailed changelog tracking all modifications to the original game.
