Maintainer activity

1 person did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 11, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits. How this is counted.

How this project is maintained

Around half of the issues opened in the past year never receive a reply. 100% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. 68% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months, so the open count overstates what is actively being worked. Only 7% of issues opened in the past year have been closed. Three people close 61% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

ZeroTier is a peer-to-peer virtual networking platform that creates a global Ethernet network allowing devices, containers, and applications to communicate as though they occupy the same physical data center.

The tool solves the problem of securely connecting distributed systems across the internet without requiring centralized infrastructure or complex VPN configuration. It works by combining a cryptographically addressed peer-to-peer network layer with an Ethernet emulation layer similar to VXLAN. Traffic is encrypted end-to-end using keys only you control, and the system attempts to route most traffic directly between peers. When direct peer-to-peer connections cannot be established, the platform offers free relaying, though at reduced speed. The network includes advanced software-defined networking features such as fine-grained access control rules for micro-segmentation and security monitoring.

Adoption suits organizations and individuals needing to connect geographically dispersed infrastructure—whether physical servers, virtual machines, containers, or cloud instances—without the operational overhead of traditional VPN solutions or SD-WAN appliances. The platform is particularly valuable for teams managing hybrid cloud deployments, remote access scenarios, or multi-region applications where latency and complexity are concerns. Mobile clients for Android and iOS are available, making it suitable for connecting mobile devices to private networks. The tool's approach of end-to-end encryption and peer-to-peer routing appeals to users prioritizing security and decentralization over centralized network control.

The project maintains active development across its core networking stack written in C++, with ongoing work on platform-specific implementations and the service API. The codebase includes both open-source components and source-available commercial features, with clear separation between the two licensing models. Build infrastructure and documentation are actively maintained to support deployment across multiple operating systems and architectures. The project provides commercial support options alongside its free tier, indicating sustained investment in both the open-source foundation and enterprise use cases.
