Detailed Description

Memex is a browser extension that enables users to curate, annotate, and organize web content through bookmarking, highlighting, note-taking, and full-text search across saved pages and PDFs.

The extension addresses the friction of managing web research by consolidating scattered bookmarks, notes, and recalled content into a single searchable repository. It allows users to highlight text and add annotations to both entire pages and specific elements like images, tag and organize content into lists, and search across all saved material using full-text indexing. The tool is inspired by Vannevar Bush's conceptual Memex and extends its capabilities to mobile platforms through companion iOS and Android applications with end-to-end encrypted synchronization.

Memex suits researchers, students, and knowledge workers who accumulate web content and need to retrieve and organize it efficiently. The project distinguishes itself through its commitment to user data ownership, funded through steward ownership rather than venture capital, which means the company cannot be sold and investors receive only capped profit shares. This funding model aims to prevent the typical incentives that lead to privacy compromises or attention optimization. Users can back up data to cloud providers and import bookmarks from other services. The tool supports keyboard shortcuts and includes a tab manager for batch operations. Contributors should note that near-term development priorities include website archiving with reader mode, mobile annotations, support for additional browsers on mobile, data import/export APIs, bulk operations, and nested collections, with React or React Native experience and test-driven development practices expected.

Development activity shows consistent engagement with community feedback through dedicated forums for feature requests and bug reports. The project maintains a public roadmap and changelog documenting past updates and upcoming work. An active team chat invites contributors to participate in prioritized feature development, indicating ongoing coordination around the near-term feature set.
