How this project is maintained

Roughly one issue in two opened in the past year never receives a reply. 100% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. Almost all tracked open issues have seen activity in the last three months. Only 37% of issues opened in the past year have been closed. Three people close 93% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

Trail Code is a tool that optimizes prompts and context for AI coding agents like Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Gemini to reduce token usage and API costs while improving code generation accuracy.

The tool addresses the problem of inefficient communication between developers and AI coding agents by building and maintaining a codebase-specific knowledge graph. It analyzes your repository structure using tree-sitter to extract relevant code patterns, dependencies, and architectural context, then automatically generates optimized prompts that feed only the most relevant information to the agent. This targeted context engineering reduces unnecessary token consumption and tool-call overhead while improving the agent's understanding of your specific codebase conventions and constraints.

Trail Code suits teams using Claude Code, Cursor, or other LLM-based coding assistants who want to reduce API costs and improve code generation quality without switching tools. It works best in established codebases where consistent patterns and conventions exist that the agent should learn. The tool persists corrections and rules across sessions through managed CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md files, so lessons learned from one interaction carry forward rather than being forgotten in the next session. Developers who find themselves repeatedly correcting the same mistakes or providing the same context will see the most benefit.

The project shows active development with regular commits addressing bug fixes and feature improvements. The codebase maintains strict TypeScript typing throughout. The tool is distributed as an npm package and available as a command-line interface for integration into development workflows. Community engagement occurs through a dedicated Discord channel where users can report issues and discuss usage patterns.
