Detailed Description

Traccar is a GPS tracking platform that provides a self-hosted or managed backend server for tracking vehicles, assets, and people.

The platform solves the problem of collecting and managing location data from GPS devices by accepting data from more than 200 GPS protocols and 2000+ device models out of the box. The Java-based backend server processes incoming GPS data, stores it in any major SQL database, and exposes the information through a REST API. The system includes real-time tracking, driver behaviour monitoring, geofencing, alarms and notifications, and detailed reporting capabilities.

Traccar suits fleet operators, GPS tracking resellers building white-label platforms, and individuals tracking personal devices. The project offers flexibility in deployment: you can self-host it for free on your own infrastructure or use official managed hosting. The platform includes complementary components—a web dashboard for browser-based tracking, a mobile manager app for viewing tracked devices, and client apps for tracking mobile devices themselves—that together form a complete tracking ecosystem.

Development activity shows consistent engagement with the codebase. The project maintains active community forums and documentation resources. The team responds to issues and pull requests, indicating ongoing maintenance of the platform and its device protocol support.
