Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 18, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits. How this is counted.

How this project is maintained

About 19% of issues opened in the past year have never received a reply. 100% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. Only 51% of issues opened in the past year have been closed. Three people close 67% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

strongSwan is an open-source IPsec-based VPN solution that implements the IKEv2 protocol for establishing secure tunnels between hosts and networks.

The tool addresses the need for secure site-to-site and host-to-host VPN connectivity by managing IPsec tunnel establishment and configuration. It uses certificate-based authentication with public key cryptography, allowing two endpoints to authenticate each other and encrypt traffic passing between them. The modern approach centers on the vici configuration interface accessed through the swanctl command, which replaces the legacy stroke interface. Configuration is declarative, defined in swanctl.conf files that specify connection parameters, local and remote identities, traffic selectors, and authentication methods. The charon daemon handles the actual IKE negotiation and tunnel management.

Adoption suits organizations needing to connect subnets across untrusted networks or establish encrypted host-to-host links. The tool works well in scenarios ranging from simple two-gateway site-to-site setups to more complex multi-host deployments. It supports both tunnel and transport modes, though tunnel mode is the default. Users should be prepared to manage certificates and private keys, either by generating them with the included pki tool or sourcing them from a certificate authority. The documentation is split between the modern vici-based approach documented on the project's documentation site and legacy stroke-based configuration described separately.

Development activity shows consistent maintenance of the codebase with regular updates to address security and functionality concerns. The project maintains both modern and legacy configuration paths, indicating a commitment to backward compatibility while advancing the platform. Active documentation efforts across multiple channels suggest ongoing investment in helping users adopt and configure the tool effectively.
