Maintainer activity

2 people did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 18, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits. How this is counted.

How this project is maintained

55% of open issues come from outside the core team, a mix of external reports and the maintainers' own roadmap. Work labelled "bug" is answered fastest, typically in about 3 hours, while "enhancement" waits about 5 days. Three people close 85% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

Scio is a Scala API for Apache Beam and Google Cloud Dataflow that brings a familiar programming model to distributed data processing.

The tool addresses the challenge of writing batch and streaming data pipelines by providing a unified Scala API inspired by Apache Spark and Scalding. Rather than working directly with Beam's Java abstractions, developers write idiomatic Scala code that compiles to Beam pipelines. This approach lets teams leverage Scala's type system and functional programming features while gaining access to Beam's execution engines, including Google Cloud Dataflow's fully managed service. The project includes extensive integrations with Google Cloud products like BigQuery, Pub/Sub, Cloud Storage, Datastore, and Bigtable, alongside support for common data formats and systems such as Avro, Parquet, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, JDBC, and TensorFlow.

Scio suits teams already invested in Scala who want to avoid Java's verbosity when building data pipelines. It works well for organizations using Google Cloud infrastructure and needing both batch and streaming capabilities in a single codebase. The project provides a giter8 template for quick project setup and includes an interactive REPL mode for exploratory work. Developers familiar with Spark or Scalding will recognize the API patterns, though the documentation explicitly compares these libraries to help teams understand the tradeoffs.

The project maintains active development with regular updates to core functionality and integrations. The codebase includes comprehensive examples ported from Beam's Java samples, alongside a dedicated examples module demonstrating common patterns. Documentation spans getting-started guides, API reference, and side-by-side code comparisons with alternative libraries. The project provides multiple artifact modules supporting different use cases and integrations, allowing teams to depend only on what they need.
