Maintainer activity

1 person did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 18, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits. How this is counted.

How this project is maintained

Around half of the issues opened in the past year never receive a reply. 100% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. 36% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months. Only 32% of issues opened in the past year have been closed.

Detailed Description

Renode is a simulation and virtual development framework for complex embedded systems that enables developers to run unmodified firmware binaries on virtual hardware without physical devices.

The tool addresses the challenges of testing embedded systems by providing a reproducible, inspectable environment where you can simulate entire systems-on-chip including CPUs, peripherals, and network connections between multiple nodes. Rather than relying on physical hardware, Renode lets you run production software on virtual boards, making it possible to test scenarios that would be difficult or expensive to replicate with real devices. The framework supports a wide range of processor architectures including ARM Cortex variants, x86, RISC-V, SPARC, POWER, Xtensa, and MSP430X, and can simulate both wired and wireless network topologies.

Renode suits teams developing IoT systems, multi-node embedded networks, or any project where reproducible testing and debugging of unmodified firmware is valuable. It is particularly useful when you need to test complex scenarios involving multiple interconnected devices or when physical hardware access is limited. The tool is designed for workflows where cost-effectiveness and reliability in testing are priorities, making it relevant for organizations building gateways, on-board computers, sensor networks, or microcontroller-based systems.

The project maintains nightly builds across multiple platforms including Linux, macOS, and Windows in various package formats, with stable numbered releases also available. Installation options include portable archives, distribution-specific packages, and Homebrew support on macOS. The codebase is written primarily in RobotFramework, indicating a test-driven development approach integrated into the tool's core design.
