Detailed Description

Pixie Plugin is a community plugin repository that extends Pixie's capabilities through integrations with external tools and services.

The plugin system addresses Pixie's design limitation of not guaranteeing data storage beyond 24 hours by enabling integration with external datastores for long-term retention. Plugins work by sending Pixie data in OpenTelemetry format to external systems, allowing users to preserve historical data while maintaining access to Pixie's real-time debugging capabilities. The system is designed to be configurable from within Pixie's UI, with future support planned for querying long-term retained data directly through Pixie's interface using PxL queries and live views.

Developers should adopt this plugin system if they need to extend Pixie beyond its real-time debugging scope. It suits organizations that want to combine Pixie's live observability with long-term data retention and analytics in external platforms. The repository currently includes plugins for New Relic and generic OpenTelemetry collectors, both focused on long-term data retention. Alert functionality is noted as coming soon. The plugin format is straightforward, requiring a plugin directory with a plugin.yaml configuration file that contains metadata about how the plugin is presented and which features it supports.

The project maintains a structured contribution process requiring code of conduct compliance, plugin testing, and pull request submission with README updates. Pull requests undergo careful review by maintainers to ensure quality and security standards are met before acceptance into the community collection.
