OpenEBS Local PV ZFS is a CSI driver that provisions Kubernetes persistent volumes backed by ZFS storage on individual cluster nodes.
The tool addresses the need for high-performance, low-latency storage in Kubernetes by exposing ZFS capabilities through the Container Storage Interface specification. It operates as a control plane for kernel ZFS volumes without a separate dataplane component. The architecture comprises a CSI Controller that handles incoming provisioning requests and a CSI Node Plugin that executes operations and makes volumes available on the host. When a persistent volume claim is created, the controller generates a ZFSVolume custom resource, triggering the node plugin to create the corresponding zvol or dataset and mount it on the host.
Local PV ZFS suits workloads requiring data locality and minimal latency, such as databases and caching systems, where the performance benefit of node-local storage outweighs the lack of cross-node replication. The volumes are bound to specific nodes and tied to physically attached disks, making them unsuitable for applications requiring high availability across node failures. The tool enables direct use of ZFS features including snapshots, clones, thin provisioning, resize, encryption, compression, and deduplication through Kubernetes storage abstractions. It requires Kubernetes 1.23 or later and ZFS 0.7 or newer, with support across multiple Linux distributions.
The project maintains active development with regular updates to its documentation, including quickstart guides, developer setup instructions, and testing procedures. Governance and release processes are formally documented, indicating structured project management. A changelog tracks modifications across releases, and contribution guidelines are established for community participation.
