LAV Filters is a set of DirectShow filters that decode and demultiplex media files using ffmpeg's libavformat and libavcodec libraries.

The tool solves the problem of playing diverse media formats within DirectShow-compatible media players. It works by wrapping ffmpeg's format and codec support into DirectShow filter components, allowing players to handle virtually any format that ffmpeg supports. The splitter automatically registers for tested formats including MKV, WebM, AVI, MP4, MOV, TS, M2TS, MPG, FLV, OGG, and BluRay containers. The audio and video decoders register with high merit to become the default choice in most players, though users can typically override this selection per-player.
