Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 18, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits. How this is counted.

How this project is maintained

85% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. Three people close 86% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

MAVLink is a lightweight message marshalling library for communication between drones and ground control stations.

The library addresses the challenge of efficient communication in bandwidth-constrained environments by providing a header-only implementation optimized for resource-constrained systems with limited RAM and flash memory. It works through XML-based message-set specifications called dialects that define the communication protocol for different systems. Python tools then convert these dialect definitions into source code for multiple programming languages. The approach is field-proven and deployed across many products as an interoperability interface between components from different manufacturers.

Developers should choose MAVLink if they are building drone systems or ground control applications where communication bandwidth is severely limited or where components from multiple manufacturers need to interoperate. The library is particularly well-suited for embedded systems with constrained resources. The project supports multiple programming languages through code generation from XML specifications, allowing teams to work in their language of choice while maintaining protocol compatibility. Installation and usage vary by platform and target language, with detailed instructions provided for C and C++ on Ubuntu and Windows, and the documentation covers generation and usage patterns for all supported languages.

The project maintains active engagement with its community through discussion forums and contribution guidelines. Development activity shows consistent attention to the codebase with regular updates and refinements to both the core library and supporting tooling. The maintainers provide comprehensive documentation covering installation across multiple platforms, code generation workflows, and practical examples for different programming languages.
