Detailed Description

FlipOff is a web app that emulates a classic mechanical split-flap display for any TV or monitor.

The tool solves the problem of recreating the nostalgic aesthetic of airport and train station flip-boards without purchasing expensive hardware. It runs as a full-screen web application in any browser, requiring only that you open the HTML file locally or serve it from a static file server. The display animates individual tiles through scramble sequences with random characters and colored backgrounds before settling on final text, mimicking the mechanical behavior of real split-flap boards. Only tiles whose content changes between messages animate, preserving authenticity. The tool includes a recorded audio clip from an actual split-flap display that plays in sync with animations, and it works entirely offline with no external dependencies.

FlipOff suits anyone wanting to turn a spare TV or monitor into a retro display for inspirational quotes, messages, or information without investment in specialized hardware. The project works across devices from mobile to 4K displays. It requires no build tools, frameworks, or npm installation—just vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Customization is straightforward through editing a constants file to adjust messages, grid dimensions, animation timing, and colors.

The project shows consistent maintenance with regular commits addressing bug fixes and feature refinements. Pull requests receive timely review and integration. The codebase demonstrates attention to code quality through incremental improvements and responsiveness to user feedback. Development activity reflects an active, engaged maintainer who continues to enhance the tool based on community input.
