How this project is maintained

About 16% of issues opened in the past year have never received a reply. 100% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. Work labelled "blocked" is answered fastest, typically in about 4 days, while "dx" waits about 3 months. 77% of issues opened in the past year have been closed, leaving a working backlog. Three people close 96% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

Kuma GUI is a web interface built on Vue.js for managing and monitoring Kuma, an Envoy-based service mesh.

The tool provides a browser-accessible dashboard for interacting with Kuma's service mesh capabilities. When Kuma runs, the GUI is automatically served on port 5681 and accessible at http://localhost:5681/gui. It leverages the Kongponents component library to deliver its interface and is built as a monorepo containing the main web application alongside custom local packages that support it.

The GUI suits operators and platform teams managing Kuma deployments who need visibility into service mesh policies, traffic routing, security configurations, and observability features. It is particularly valuable for those running Kuma across Kubernetes and VMs in single or multi-zone setups, as it provides centralized access to Kuma's L4-L7 connectivity, discovery, and security capabilities. The tool is embedded directly in the Kuma binary, eliminating separate deployment steps.

The project maintains active development with continuous integration of GUI changes into the Kuma software binary. The repository is structured as a monorepo with clear separation between the main web application and supporting packages, with documentation provided for contributors at multiple levels. Development requires Node.js, npm, git, make, and jq, with specific Node versions tracked via .nvmrc for consistency across contributors.
