Detailed Description

KubeVirt Enhancements is a proposal tracking and management system that coordinates feature development across the KubeVirt virtualization project through a structured enhancement proposal process.

The tool addresses the challenge of managing feature development across multiple Special Interest Groups within KubeVirt by establishing a centralized process for proposing, reviewing, and prioritizing enhancements. Authors submit Virtualization Enhancement Proposals through pull requests to the enhancements repository, tracked alongside issues that document progress through maturity stages and associated bugs. Each proposal requires sign-off from an owning SIG and acknowledgment from all affected SIGs, ensuring cross-team coordination. The process establishes clear deadlines—Enhancement Freeze for proposal acceptance and Code Freeze for implementation—with weekly release team checks to maintain momentum on prioritized work.

Teams should adopt this approach if they operate KubeVirt with multiple SIGs and need visibility into feature progress across the project. It suits organizations where feature coordination across teams has been unclear or where implementation status tracking has been scattered. The system is modeled on Kubernetes' KEP process, making it familiar to those working in the Kubernetes ecosystem.

The project maintains active engagement with regular weekly checks on tracked proposals during release cycles and coordinated announcements to the development mailing list at Enhancement Freeze to highlight approved work. The repository serves as the single authoritative reference for each enhancement, requiring owners to keep associated tracking issues updated with implementation pull requests, reported bugs, and user feedback. Graduation between maturity stages requires new pull requests updating the proposal history, creating additional review checkpoints for acceptance criteria.
