Detailed Description

Kata Containers is a community and governance repository that coordinates an open source project building lightweight virtual machines that combine container performance with VM-level workload isolation and security.

The project addresses the tension between container efficiency and VM security by implementing a standard that feels and performs like containers while providing the isolation advantages of virtual machines. Kata Containers is designed to be architecture agnostic, run on multiple hypervisors, and maintain compatibility with the OCI specification and Kubernetes. The implementation combines technology from Intel Clear Containers and Hyper runV, merging their approaches into a unified standard.

Organizations evaluating Kata Containers should understand that it serves teams needing stronger isolation than traditional containers provide without sacrificing the operational characteristics they expect from container runtimes. The project is managed by the Open Infrastructure Foundation and welcomes contributors with diverse skills including development, operations, documentation, marketing, and product management. Installation guides and contribution documentation are available for those ready to adopt or participate.

The project maintains active community channels across mailing lists, IRC, Slack, and social media, indicating sustained engagement. Governance structures are documented including defined roles for contributors, committers, administrators, and an Architecture Committee with regular meetings. The community has established formal processes for vulnerability handling, disclosure, and management, along with a review team rotation system and resource ownership documentation.
