How this project is maintained

About 17% of issues opened in the past year have never received a reply. 93% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. 70% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months, so the open count overstates what is actively being worked. Only 47% of issues opened in the past year have been closed. Three people close 59% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

DOSBox-X is a cross-platform DOS emulator that extends the original DOSBox project to support not only DOS games but also DOS applications and legacy Windows environments.

The tool addresses the problem of running older DOS and Windows software on modern systems where native execution is impossible. It emulates the hardware and operating system environments needed to execute these programs, building on DOSBox's foundation while expanding its scope significantly. Beyond DOS gaming, DOSBox-X adds support for Windows 3.x, Windows 95, 98, and ME emulation with acceleration, as well as DOS/V and NEC PC-98 environments, allowing users to run software originally written for these platforms.

Developers and users should choose DOSBox-X if they need to run legacy DOS applications or older Windows software rather than just DOS games. The project suits scenarios where compatibility with a broad range of historical software matters more than minimal resource usage, since the expanded feature set and support for multiple operating system environments come with additional complexity. The tool maintains backward compatibility with the original DOSBox's game library while offering substantially more functionality for non-gaming DOS and Windows applications.

The project maintains an active development cycle with nightly builds available alongside regular releases. The repository includes comprehensive documentation covering installation, build instructions, and a wiki with detailed information about features and compatibility. The maintainers provide multiple communication channels including a Discord server for community discussion and support. The project explicitly documents both its supported features and features unlikely to be implemented, setting clear expectations for potential users.
