Detailed Description

iA-Fonts is a collection of free variable writing fonts designed by iA.

The fonts address the need for typefaces optimized for writing and text editing. They are variable fonts derived from IBM Plex, modified to suit the specific requirements of long-form writing and distraction-free composition. The project provides three font families—Mono, Duo, and Quattro—each with distinct characteristics for different writing contexts.

Developers should be aware of strict usage restrictions before adopting these fonts. The fonts are intended primarily for personal use and are bundled only with iA Writer across its supported platforms. The project explicitly prohibits bundling these fonts in other text editors, renaming them with minor modifications, or redistributing them with third-party applications or plugins. For those building text editors, the project recommends using IBM Plex as an alternative. The fonts may be installed as custom typefaces for personal use in other applications, but redistribution is not permitted. Any use outside text editors requires clear attribution to iA Writer.

The project maintains its fonts as modified versions of IBM Plex and directs users to review the license file before use or distribution. Development activity centers on maintaining compatibility with the upstream IBM Plex project while preserving the specific typographic choices made for writing-focused applications. The project provides background documentation on its design philosophy through linked articles explaining the rationale behind each font family's characteristics.
