Detailed Description

Mailflare is a self-hosted email inbox for custom domains built on Cloudflare.

The tool solves the problem of managing email for custom domains without relying on third-party email providers. It leverages Cloudflare's infrastructure by running as a Worker application within your Cloudflare account. Incoming messages arrive through Cloudflare Email Routing, while outgoing mail uses Cloudflare's email service. All mail data is stored in your own D1 database and attachments in your own R2 bucket, keeping everything under your control. The dashboard lets you connect domains, create personal and shared mailboxes with delegated access, and manage routing rules to store, forward, reject, or categorize messages. The interface supports standard email operations including search, custom folders, stars, snoozing, archive, spam filtering, and contact management.

Mailflare suits teams and professionals who want to own their email infrastructure while staying within the Cloudflare ecosystem. Receiving email is free, though sending requires a paid Cloudflare Workers plan. The tool is designed for users already managing domains through Cloudflare. For those preferring not to use Cloudflare Workers, the project also supports Docker-based self-hosting on any server, substituting SQLite for D1 and local file storage for R2, with flexibility in choosing SMTP relays for inbound and outbound mail.

The project shows active development with regular updates to core functionality and infrastructure. Work spans across multiple areas including email handling, user interface improvements, and deployment mechanisms. The maintainer responds to issues and provides detailed documentation covering deployment requirements, manual setup procedures, and self-hosting alternatives. The codebase is written in TypeScript and includes tooling for local development with sample data seeding.
