Detailed Description

Sniffnet is a cross-platform network traffic monitoring application written in Rust that provides users with an intuitive interface for capturing and analyzing internet traffic. The application is designed to be comfortable to use while maintaining reliability across Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. It is available in over 20 languages, including Chinese, German, French, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and Polish.

The application offers comprehensive packet capture and analysis capabilities. Users can select a specific network adapter to inspect, apply filters to observed traffic, and import or export capture reports in PCAP format. The tool identifies over 6000 upper layer services, protocols, trojans, and worms, enabling detailed protocol inspection. Real-time charts display traffic intensity, while overall statistics provide insights into internet traffic patterns. Users can search and inspect individual network connections in real time through a dedicated inspect interface.

Sniffnet includes advanced features for network reconnaissance and security auditing. The application can identify connections within local networks, discover geographical locations of remote hosts, and determine domain names and ASN information for hosts exchanging traffic. It can also identify which programs on the system are generating network traffic. Users can save favorite network hosts, services, and programs for quick reference, and import custom IP blacklists to highlight potentially dangerous connections.

The interface supports customization through multiple style options and custom theme support, with a thumbnail mode available for monitoring network activity while the application is minimized. Real-time alerts can be configured to notify users when defined network events occur. The application maintains a comprehensive wiki with step-by-step guides, usage examples, and answers to frequently asked questions.

The repository shares contributors with major projects including Microsoft's VSCode and TypeScript repositories, as well as the Rust language repository itself. The project is sponsored by organizations including NLnet, ADS Fund, and IPinfo, and maintains a roadmap for future development.
