Detailed Description

Beatsync is a high-precision web audio player built for multi-device playback synchronization.

The tool solves the problem of playing audio in sync across multiple devices connected over a network. It uses NTP-inspired time synchronization primitives to achieve millisecond-accurate synchronization, allowing users to coordinate playback across browsers on different machines. The player also supports spatial audio, enabling control of device volumes through a virtual listening source to create sonic effects based on spatial positioning.

Beatsync suits developers and users who need coordinated multi-device audio playback in web environments. It works on any device with a modern browser, with Chrome recommended for optimal performance. The project is self-hostable, allowing you to run your own instance rather than relying on the official beatsync.gg application. The tool is in early development, with mobile support working but marked as experimental, so adoption should account for potential instability and the possibility of encountering issues that may require contributing fixes back to the project.

The project maintains a monorepo structure using Turborepo, with a Bun-based HTTP and WebSocket server, a Next.js frontend using Tailwind and Shadcn/ui components, and shared type-safe schemas and functions between client and server. Development activity shows ongoing work on core synchronization infrastructure and user interface refinement, with the maintainers actively addressing early-stage issues and welcoming community contributions.
