Detailed Description

Elastic APM is an application performance monitoring platform that collects, processes, and visualizes performance data from applications and infrastructure.

The platform addresses the need to understand application behavior and performance in production environments. It works through a distributed architecture where language-specific agents instrument applications to capture performance metrics, traces, and errors, sending this data to an APM Server that processes and stores it, with a UI layer providing visualization and analysis capabilities. This approach allows teams to monitor real-world application performance without requiring code changes beyond agent installation.

Organizations should adopt Elastic APM if they need comprehensive performance visibility across polyglot environments, since the platform provides agents for Go, Java, JavaScript, Node.js, PHP, Python, Ruby, and .NET, along with mobile agents for Android and iOS. It suits teams already using the Elastic Stack, as APM integrates with Elasticsearch for storage and Kibana for visualization. The platform is particularly valuable for teams managing microservices or distributed systems where understanding request flows across service boundaries is critical.

The project maintains active development across multiple agent implementations and server components, with ongoing work to expand platform support including mobile instrumentation. The codebase reflects a mature, multi-team effort coordinated through a central repository that serves as the hub for issue tracking and resource management across the distributed agent and server projects.
