Detailed Description

hishtory is a shell history manager that stores your command history with context, syncs it across computers, and makes it queryable.

The tool addresses the limitation of standard shell history by capturing metadata alongside each command: the directory where it ran, exit status, execution duration, hostname, and user. This contextual information is stored locally in a SQLite database and can be synced across machines using end-to-end encryption. The querying system supports both interactive search via Control+R and direct SQL queries, with a flexible syntax that lets you filter by command text, hostname, user, exit code, and date ranges.

hishtory works with bash, zsh, and fish shells. It suits developers and system administrators who work across multiple machines and need to recall commands executed in specific contexts. The tool is particularly valuable when you need to find a command you ran on a different computer or remember the exact conditions under which something was executed. For users who prefer direct database access, the underlying SQLite database is queryable without restrictions.

The project shows consistent maintenance with regular updates available through the built-in update mechanism. Development activity includes active bug fixes and feature additions across the codebase. The maintainer responds to issues and pull requests, indicating ongoing engagement with the user base. The project maintains support for multiple shell environments, suggesting attention to compatibility across different user setups.
