Detailed Description

csi-driver is a Kubernetes CSI plugin that automatically mounts signed certificates to Pods using ephemeral volumes.

The tool solves the problem of securely provisioning certificates to containerized applications while maintaining private key isolation. It integrates with cert-manager to request and mount certificate key pairs directly into Pod filesystems as ephemeral volumes. This approach ensures private keys remain on the node and are never transmitted over the network, while guaranteeing each application replica has a unique certificate present at runtime. Certificates are automatically renewed based on expiry and destroyed when the Pod terminates.

Teams should adopt this tool when they need to implement mutual TLS or other certificate-based security between Pods without managing certificate distribution separately. It suits applications that require per-replica certificates with automatic renewal and where keeping private keys local to nodes is a security requirement. The CSI driver approach reduces operational overhead by allowing certificate specifications to be defined inline within Pod templates rather than through separate certificate management workflows.

The project maintains active development with regular updates to its codebase and documentation. The tool is distributed through standard Kubernetes package repositories and includes comprehensive documentation integrated with the broader cert-manager project site.
