Maintainer activity

7 people did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 18, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits. How this is counted.

How this project is maintained

Roughly one issue in four opened in the past year never receives a reply. 75% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. Work labelled "type/chore" is answered fastest, typically in about an hour, while "cve" waits about 13 days. 34% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months. Only 59% of issues opened in the past year have been closed.

Detailed Description

pack is a command-line tool for building container images using Cloud Native Buildpacks.

The tool addresses the need to convert application source code into runnable container images without requiring developers to write or maintain Dockerfiles. It implements the Platform Interface Specification for Cloud Native Buildpacks, automating the detection of application type and selection of appropriate build steps. The approach abstracts away container build complexity by delegating to buildpacks that encapsulate language and framework-specific build logic.

The tool serves three distinct audiences. App developers use pack to transform source code into images with minimal configuration. Buildpack authors use it to develop and test buildpacks before distribution. Operators use it to package buildpacks and maintain applications at scale. The project suits teams adopting cloud-native practices who want to standardize image builds across multiple languages and frameworks without managing individual build configurations per project.

The project maintains organized contribution and development processes, with dedicated documentation for contributors covering the pull request workflow, development setup, and release procedures. The codebase is written in Go and actively documents its specifications and implementation details in a separate specifications repository for reference by other platform implementations.
