5 people did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 7, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits.

How this project is maintained

About 6% of issues opened in the past year have never received a reply. 50% of open issues come from outside the core team, a mix of external reports and the maintainers' own roadmap. Work labelled "type:feature" is answered fastest, typically in about 11 hours, while "triaged" waits about 5 days. 20% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months. 89% of issues opened in the past year have been closed, leaving a working backlog.

Detailed Description

Squad is a CLI tool that orchestrates AI agent teams for software development through GitHub Copilot.

Squad addresses the challenge of coordinating multiple specialized AI assistants on a single project. It creates a persistent team of AI agents—frontend specialist, backend specialist, tester, and lead—that live as files in your repository, learn your codebase across sessions, and share context with one another. Rather than treating each AI interaction as isolated, the tool maintains team member state and knowledge, allowing agents to build on prior work and make coordinated decisions. You direct the team through natural language in Copilot Chat, and each agent operates in its own context, reading only relevant knowledge and writing back inspectable results.

Squad suits developers who want to delegate routine coordination and parallel execution tasks while retaining human oversight and decision-making authority. It works best for teams already using GitHub Copilot and wanting to scale their AI assistance beyond single-turn interactions. The tool is explicitly positioned as a productivity amplifier for humans, not a replacement for engineers or reviewers—people remain accountable for priorities, approvals, and final code changes. Squad is alpha software with APIs and CLI commands that may change between releases.

The project maintains active development with regular updates documented in its changelog. Installation is available across multiple platforms through npm, Homebrew, WinGet, and standalone scripts that vendor Node.js to avoid external dependencies. The tool provides a quick-start preset option for immediate use and step-by-step setup for deliberate customization. Documentation is comprehensive, covering installation, features, and usage patterns through an official site.
