Detailed Description

Basecamp CLI is a command-line interface for managing Basecamp projects, todos, messages, and other resources from the terminal or through AI agents.

The tool solves the problem of accessing Basecamp functionality outside the web interface, particularly for developers and AI agents that need programmatic access. It provides JSON output with breadcrumbs for navigation, making it suitable for integration with AI systems. Authentication uses OAuth with automatic token refresh, and the CLI can work standalone or as a skill integrated into various AI agents including Claude, Copilot, Gemini, and others.

Developers should choose this tool if they need terminal-based Basecamp access or want to integrate Basecamp operations into AI agent workflows. It suits projects where team members prefer command-line interfaces or where automation through agents is valuable. The tool includes native plugins for Claude Code and Codex, while Grok Build can read the shared skill directly. Installation is straightforward across macOS, Linux, Windows, and WSL2, with multiple package managers supported including Homebrew, Scoop, system packages, and Nix.

The project maintains careful attention to upgrade safety, implementing transactional binary swaps with automatic rollback on failure and Sigstore signature verification for self-managed installations. The CLI distinguishes between installation methods and provides appropriate upgrade guidance for each, refusing to touch system-managed packages while offering specific commands for others. Error handling uses structured JSON output with explicit failure codes rather than silent failures, and the setup process adapts to whether OAuth approval is interactive or whether existing accounts should be preserved.
