Maintainer activity

4 people did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 18, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits. How this is counted.

How this project is maintained

Roughly one issue in four opened in the past year never receives a reply. 86% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. 71% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months, so the open count overstates what is actively being worked. Only 58% of issues opened in the past year have been closed. Three people close 82% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

Arduino IDE 2.x is a complete rewrite of the Arduino integrated development environment built on the Theia IDE framework and Electron.

The tool addresses the need for a modernized Arduino development environment while maintaining compatibility with the previous version's interface and user experience. Rather than carrying forward code from the 1.x IDE, the 2.x version is architected around Theia as its foundation, with Electron providing the desktop application layer. Backend operations including compilation and uploading are delegated to an arduino-cli instance running in daemon mode, separating concerns between the user interface and the build toolchain.

The IDE suits developers working with Arduino boards who want a contemporary development experience without learning a new interface. The project is appropriate for anyone currently using Arduino 1.x who seeks improved performance and features, as the design explicitly prioritizes a frictionless upgrade path. The tool is maintained by the Arduino team with community contributions, and support is available through the official Help Center and forum.

The project maintains active engagement with its user base through an issue tracker and security reporting process. Development follows a structured contribution model with documented guidelines for bug fixes, beta testing, and translations. The codebase is written in TypeScript and distributed under the GNU AGPLv3 license, with third-party dependencies under compatible licenses including GPLv2, MIT, and BSD-3.
