Maintainer activity

25 people did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 7, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits.

How this project is maintained

Practically every issue opened in the past year has drawn a reply. 100% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. Work labelled "editing" is answered fastest, typically in about 6 hours, while "low priority" waits about 28 hours. 58% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months. 65% of issues opened in the past year have been closed, leaving a working backlog.

Detailed Description

AndroidX Media is a collection of support libraries for implementing media use cases on Android, including ExoPlayer for playback, Transformer for video editing, and media sessions.

The libraries address the need for robust, modern media handling on Android by providing modular components that developers can compose according to their requirements. ExoPlayer serves as an extensible media player that handles local playback with support for various formats and protocols like DASH. Transformer enables video editing capabilities. The project provides API stability guarantees for commonly used APIs while marking advanced APIs as unstable to allow for evolution without breaking existing code.

Developers building media-heavy Android applications should adopt these libraries if they need reliable playback, video editing, or session management. The modular architecture means you can depend only on the components you need rather than pulling in unnecessary functionality. Existing ExoPlayer and MediaSession users have a documented migration path to the AndroidX Media versions. The libraries are available through the Google Maven repository for straightforward Gradle integration, though some modules with external dependencies require local repository cloning. Java 8 support must be enabled in build configuration to use the libraries.

The project maintains comprehensive documentation including developer guides, API references, release notes, and sample code. Development activity shows regular updates to the codebase with ongoing refinement of the media handling capabilities. The team provides a developer blog to communicate major developments and changes to users.
