How this project is maintained

Around half of the issues opened in the past year never receive a reply. 100% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. 69% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months, so the open count overstates what is actively being worked. Only 8% of issues opened in the past year have been closed. Three people close 84% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

SponsorBlock is a browser extension that automatically skips sponsor segments in YouTube videos. The tool operates on a crowdsourced model where users submit the timestamps of sponsored content they encounter, and the extension uses this collective data to automatically skip those segments for all users. Beyond sponsors, it can skip intros, outros, subscription reminders, and other non-content segments. The extension also works with Invidious.

The problem it solves is viewer fatigue from in-video sponsorships and other interruptions that break the viewing experience. Rather than relying on a single authority to identify these segments, SponsorBlock distributes the task across its user base. When a user marks a segment, that information becomes available to everyone else, creating a shared database of skippable content that grows more comprehensive over time.

Anyone considering adoption should know the tool works across Chrome, Chromium, Firefox, Edge, and Safari, with Android support available. It suits viewers who watch YouTube regularly and want uninterrupted content consumption without manually seeking past sponsor reads. The extension is lightweight and requires no configuration beyond installation. The project maintains a publicly downloadable database and API documentation, making it possible to integrate SponsorBlock data into other applications or media players if desired.

Development activity shows consistent engagement with community contributions and localization efforts across multiple languages through a translation platform. The maintainers have made the backend server code publicly available to prevent the project from becoming abandoned. The database and API are openly accessible under a published license, enabling third-party ports to media players and other platforms beyond the browser extension itself.
