Detailed Description

TigerVNC is a high-performance VNC client and server for remote desktop access across multiple platforms.

VNC enables viewing and interacting with a desktop environment running on another computer by transmitting only the display to your local machine. TigerVNC addresses the need for faster remote display performance by implementing an accelerated variant of Tight encoding using the libjpeg-turbo JPEG codec. The tool originated as a next-generation Unix and Linux development effort for TightVNC, building on RealVNC 4 and X.org code bases.

TigerVNC suits organizations and users requiring cross-platform remote desktop capabilities. The vncviewer component provides a unified client experience across Windows, Unix, and Linux systems. On Unix and Linux, Xvnc functions as both a VNC server and X server with a virtual framebuffer, typically managed through the vncserver service. The Windows server component, winvnc, is noted as unmaintained and may not function correctly, particularly when Fast user switching or Remote Desktop features are active. For users prioritizing stability and active maintenance, the Unix and Linux server implementations represent the more reliable choice.
