Maintainer activity

14 people did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 18, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits. How this is counted.

How this project is maintained

Roughly one issue in four opened in the past year never receives a reply. 87% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. Work labelled "Documentation" is answered fastest, typically in about 2 hours, while "Feature" waits about 13 days. 55% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months. Only 45% of issues opened in the past year have been closed.

Detailed Description

SQLMesh is a data transformation framework that provides backwards compatibility with dbt while offering additional capabilities for SQL and Python-based transformations at scale.

The tool addresses the need for data teams to deploy transformations quickly and reliably by combining SQL transformation capabilities with a plan-and-apply workflow similar to infrastructure-as-code tools. It tracks data modifications to avoid rebuilding tables unnecessarily, supports incremental models that run only required transformations, and enables unit testing and automated audits without additional cost. The framework includes virtual data environments that create isolated development spaces without warehouse expenses, and provides column-level lineage to show the impact of changes before execution. It transpiles SQL across multiple dialects, allowing developers to write in any dialect while the tool converts to the target warehouse syntax.

Teams should adopt this tool if they want to reduce transformation costs through efficient incremental processing and avoid the complexity of Jinja templating in favor of straightforward SQL definitions. It suits projects where visibility into data changes matters—the plan-and-apply workflow and table diffs between production and development environments help teams understand impact before deployment. The tool works across more than ten SQL dialects and integrates with CI/CD systems for blue-green deployments.

Development activity shows consistent engagement with the codebase through regular commits and pull request activity. The project maintains active issue tracking and responds to community contributions. Documentation is comprehensive and regularly updated to reflect current functionality. The tool receives ongoing refinement in its core features around efficiency, testing capabilities, and SQL dialect support.
