Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 18, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits. How this is counted.

How this project is maintained

93% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. Three people close 77% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

ShredOS is a bootable operating system for securely erasing disks on x86 PCs, servers, and Intel-based Macs.

The tool addresses the need for reliable, irreversible data destruction by packaging nwipe, a disk wiping utility, into a minimal bootable environment. When booted, ShredOS presents nwipe's interactive interface where users select target disks, choose an erasure method, review selections, and initiate the wipe process. The approach eliminates dependencies on the host operating system, ensuring consistent erasure behavior across different hardware configurations.

ShredOS suits organizations and individuals requiring certified secure disk disposal, particularly those managing multiple machines or decommissioning hardware at scale. It works well for both interactive workflows where an operator reviews each disk before erasure and for unattended scenarios through its autonuke mode. The tool supports various boot methods including USB flash drives, CD/DVD media, Ventoy, and PXE booting. It can generate PDF erasure certificates and be configured with custom scripts, persistent options, and headless operation. The project provides both ready-to-use images and source builds via Buildroot, with separate distributions for BIOS and UEFI systems.

Development activity shows consistent maintenance with regular releases providing both stable and pre-release builds. The project maintains comprehensive documentation covering installation, configuration of nwipe parameters, keyboard and display settings, and build procedures from source. Release notes include checksums and detailed asset information, reflecting attention to verification and transparency. The codebase is structured around Buildroot for reproducible image generation, and the project actively supports multiple image formats to accommodate different deployment scenarios and user preferences.
