Detailed Description

ExplorerBlurMica is a Windows shell extension that applies background blur, Acrylic, or Mica visual effects to File Explorer on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The tool solves the problem of Explorer lacking the modern visual effects available in other Windows applications. It works by registering as a shell extension that hooks into Explorer's rendering pipeline, allowing it to apply blur or Acrylic effects on Windows 10 and Mica effects on Windows 11. The effects are customizable with adjustable blend colors and automatically adapt to light and dark mode settings.

Developers should choose this tool if they want to modernize Explorer's appearance on their systems without replacing the entire shell. It suits users running Windows 10 or 11 who prefer the visual polish of newer Windows UI frameworks applied to their file manager. The project is specifically scoped to Explorer only; for applying effects globally across the entire desktop environment, the maintainers direct users to their separate DWMBlurGlass project. The tool maintains compatibility with other Explorer-modifying software such as StartAllBack and OldNewExplorer, as well as third-party themes.

Installation requires downloading a compiled archive, extracting it to a system location, and running an administrator command to register the shell extension. The configuration interface runs on Python and depends on minhook and customtkinter libraries. The project maintains active development with regular updates addressing different Windows versions and their varying UI frameworks, including support for Windows 11's 23H2 WinUI3 and earlier 22H2 XamlIslands implementations. Bug fixes are responsive, with a documented recovery procedure available if Explorer crashes during use.
