GitGenius
Repository Taxonomy

v1.1.0
locked

locked 2026-09-11

Every repository GitGenius indexes is assigned one primary subcategory from a fixed list, plus up to two more it substantially serves. The list is versioned and its slugs are permanent, so a category page means the same thing a year from now. Free-form keywords are still stored for text relevance, but navigation runs on this taxonomy.

Repositories per category

A repository counts under its primary subcategory's category and under any other it serves.

A second facet, kept separate from the subject: what the repository is, rather than what it is about.

Size health

Governance rules: split a subcategory whose primary count stays above 300, and merge or hide one that stays under 8 for a quarter.

Thin subcategories
0 under 8

None: every subcategory has at least 8 repositories.

How a repository is assigned

The classifier may only answer with ids from the list, and these rules decide which one.

one-primary

Every repo gets exactly one primary subcategory. Add up to two secondary subcategories only when the repo substantially serves them, not for passing mentions.

what-it-does

Classify by what the repo is and does for its user. The implementation language belongs in the language facet and the form (library, CLI, app) belongs in the type facet, not in the category.

subject-first

Topic-specific awesome lists, tutorials, books, templates, examples and CLIs go to their subject subcategory, with the form recorded in type. Learning & Resources is only for material that spans many subjects.

domain-first-ai

When AI is applied to a domain (AI stock analysis, AI pentesting, AI note-taking), the domain is primary and the matching AI subcategory is secondary. AI Agents & LLM Apps is primary only when the AI capability itself is the product.

apps-vs-frameworks

End-user applications go to their subject. Frameworks, SDKs and toolkits for building applications go to the framework subcategories.

follow-the-product

Drivers, SDKs, clients, mirrors, forks, Helm charts and plugins for a product go where the product goes (a MongoDB driver goes to nosql-key-value).

trust-order

Ground the decision in the owner's description, GitHub topics and README first. The GitGenius summary is secondary evidence and can be wrong.

none-fit

If nothing fits, choose the closest subcategory, set none_fit, and suggest a new subcategory name. Never invent an id.
