Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 11, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits. How this is counted.

Detailed Description

ZMap is a network scanner designed for conducting Internet-wide surveys through single-packet scanning.

ZMap addresses the challenge of performing large-scale network reconnaissance efficiently. Traditional network scanners struggle with the computational and bandwidth demands of scanning billions of hosts. ZMap solves this by using a single-packet probing approach, which dramatically reduces the resources required while maintaining the ability to scan the entire IPv4 address space. The tool generates probe packets, sends them across the network, and processes responses to identify active hosts and services.

Organizations conducting Internet-wide measurement studies, security researchers performing global network surveys, and teams needing to assess the exposure of specific services across large address ranges should consider ZMap. The project is particularly suited for research applications and infrastructure scanning at scale, where traditional port scanners would be impractical due to time and resource constraints. ZMap's design makes it the appropriate choice when the goal is rapid enumeration of hosts responding to specific protocols or ports rather than detailed vulnerability assessment of individual targets.

The project maintains active development with regular commits addressing bug fixes and feature improvements. The codebase receives ongoing attention to performance optimization and compatibility updates. The maintainers respond to issues and pull requests, indicating sustained engagement with the user community. Documentation is kept current to reflect the tool's capabilities and usage patterns.
