Maintainer activity

4 people did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 7, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits.

How this project is maintained

About 8% of issues opened in the past year have never received a reply. Only 28% of open issues come from outside the core team — the tracker reads mainly as internal planning. Work labelled "integration-with-other-tools" is answered fastest, typically in about 17 hours, while "parser" waits about 5 days. 85% of issues opened in the past year have been closed, leaving a working backlog. Three people close 92% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

Xonsh is a Python-based shell that merges Python 3 syntax with shell command execution, enabling developers to write scripts that seamlessly blend both paradigms.

The tool solves the friction of switching between shell scripting and Python by treating them as a unified language. Rather than context-switching between bash and Python files, developers write a single codebase where Python expressions and shell commands coexist. Variables, functions, and control flow work identically whether you are manipulating file paths, running system commands, or processing data. The shell integrates subprocess output directly into Python expressions and allows Python objects to be passed to shell commands without serialization overhead.

Xonsh suits developers and operators who spend significant time in the terminal and want to leverage Python's expressiveness without abandoning shell workflows. It works across Linux, macOS, Windows, BSD, Jupyter notebooks, and specialized environments like Raspberry Pi and Nix. The project includes an extension system called xontribs that adds capabilities such as terminal integration, prompt customization, AI assistant integration, and shell compatibility layers. Someone choosing Xonsh should expect a learning curve if accustomed to traditional shells, as the syntax and mental model differ substantially.

Development activity shows consistent engagement with both maintenance and feature expansion. The project maintains automated testing infrastructure and distributes builds across multiple platforms and packaging formats. Community interaction occurs through a dedicated chat channel, indicating active user support. The codebase receives regular updates addressing cross-platform compatibility and integration with contemporary tools and services.
