Detailed Description

WebTorrent is a streaming torrent client for Node.js and the browser that uses JavaScript to enable peer-to-peer file transfer across both runtimes.

The tool solves the problem of enabling BitTorrent functionality in web browsers without plugins or extensions. In Node.js, it operates as a standard torrent client using TCP and UDP to communicate with other torrent clients. In the browser, it adapts the BitTorrent protocol to work over WebRTC data channels, the only peer-to-peer transport available in web environments. Because WebRTC differs fundamentally from traditional BitTorrent transports, browser-based clients can only connect to other WebRTC-capable peers, not to standard UDP/TCP torrent clients.

Developers should choose this tool when building web applications that need native torrent streaming without requiring users to install software or browser extensions. It suits projects targeting both server and browser environments where code reuse across runtimes is valuable. To seed files to web peers, you need a compatible client such as WebTorrent Desktop, webtorrent-hybrid, or Instant.io. The README notes that established torrent clients like Vuze have added WebTorrent support to connect to both traditional and web peers.

The project maintains active continuous integration workflows. Community engagement occurs through a dedicated Discord server. Development follows a consistent code style standard.
