Maintainer activity

4 people did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 11, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits.

How this project is maintained

About 15% of issues opened in the past year have never received a reply. 91% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. Work labelled "kind/triage" is answered fastest, typically in about 5 hours, while "kind/ux" waits about 2 days. 64% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months, so the open count overstates what is actively being worked. Only 59% of issues opened in the past year have been closed.

Detailed Description

mitmproxy is an interactive TLS-capable intercepting HTTP proxy for penetration testers and software developers.

The tool addresses the need to inspect, modify, and debug HTTP traffic in real time. It works by intercepting encrypted TLS connections and presenting the traffic through an interactive interface, allowing users to examine requests and responses, modify them on the fly, and replay them. The project provides three interfaces: a console-based interactive mode, mitmdump for command-line usage similar to tcpdump for HTTP, and mitmweb for web-based access. It supports HTTP/1, HTTP/2, and WebSocket protocols.

The tool suits developers and security professionals who need to debug client-server interactions, test API behavior, or perform penetration testing. It is particularly valuable when you need to see exactly what traffic your application sends and receives, intercept and modify requests before they reach the server, or inspect encrypted HTTPS traffic. The interactive console interface makes it accessible for ad-hoc debugging sessions, while the command-line and web interfaces provide options for different workflows and automation scenarios.

The project maintains active engagement with its community through GitHub Discussions for user support. It welcomes contributions of all forms and provides clear documentation on the website along with precompiled binaries for installation. The codebase is written in Python and includes guidance for building from source through its contributing documentation.
