Maintainer activity

13 people did triage or write work on this repository in the last 12 months.

At least 38% of gpuweb's 13 maintainers work at Google. 9 say where they work, and 5 of those are Google.

Counts unlabeled, assigned, unassigned, milestoned, demilestoned, locked, unlocked over the last 12 months. These are issue and pull request events that require triage or write permission. Commits and code review are not counted. labeled and renamed are excluded because GitHub issue forms record the issue author as the actor. Figures from October 11, 2026. This count is not comparable across projects: each project's automation decides which of these events a person emits.

How this project is maintained

About 9% of issues opened in the past year have never received a reply. 78% of open issues come from outside the core team, so the backlog reflects real-world use rather than internal planning. 51% of tracked open issues have had no activity in three months. Only 53% of issues opened in the past year have been closed. Three people close 59% of everything that gets resolved.

Detailed Description

WebGPU is a W3C standardized API specification for GPU computing and graphics on the web, developed through both a Community Group and a formal Working Group.

The project addresses the need for a modern, safe, and efficient way to access GPU capabilities from web applications. Rather than being an implementation, this repository serves as the authoritative source for the WebGPU API specification and the WebGPU Shading Language (WGSL) specification. The approach involves collaborative standardization through W3C processes, with work-in-progress specifications published openly and refined through community feedback and formal working group deliberation.

Developers should understand that this is a specification repository, not a library or framework to integrate into projects. It is intended for those implementing WebGPU in browser engines, those building tools and libraries that depend on the WebGPU standard, and those contributing to the standardization process itself. Hardware vendors, browser engine developers, and graphics engineers are particularly encouraged to participate.

The project maintains active communication through multiple channels including a Matrix chat room for real-time discussion, GitHub issues for technical concerns, and a discussions forum for asynchronous conversation. The wiki and issue tracker serve as primary information sources for ongoing work. Contributions are guided by formal contribution guidelines and the W3C Code of Conduct, reflecting the structured nature of standards development. The project operates transparently with work-in-progress specifications publicly available and open to community input throughout the standardization process.
